The Personal Essay is by far the most nebulous and challenging part of the already daunting college application process for many students. My goal with this class is to lead students to see the essay as an opportunity rather than an intimidating task, and to seize this chance to tie together their narrative and differentiate themselves as a whole person rather than just another applicant. Most importantly, my goal with the class is to get the students to become comfortable with storytelling, not only for the purpose of the college application process but also as a tool for self-exploration and reflection. To that end, I plan to use the class time to encourage students to write creative responses to various prompts to broaden their thinking, work on incorporating several key techniques into their writing, and practice putting their experiences and inspirations into words in a cohesive and engaging way.

Each personal essay will be heavily influenced by each student’s personal goals, the school they hope to attend, and the things they wish to study there. On that note, the College Consulting portion of the class will encourage students to see college not just as a destination, but instead as a step in the larger path of their career. By having each student focus first on what they want to achieve, and what their passions and interests are, we can then move on to finding the best fitting programs and schools that will help them achieve their goals and meet their needs. The course will also include an overview of the college application process and the other crucial components that go into the application, such as extracurricular activities and resumes.

No matter what your area of study or future occupation, the ability to write clearly and concisely is an important skill that you will require for your entire life. In academic life, your skill and aptitude in a particular area will most likely be measured through your ability to craft an essay. Outside of academia, the techniques used to create a convincing essay will be used to apply for jobs, draft reports, and effectively relay information. Therefore, it is no surprise that the essay is a critical part of the exam. The test is used to measure a student's aptitude for academic life, and colleges will use the results from your test, including your essay, to benchmark your potential to thrive in an intense scholastic environment. Despite some differences from the old test, the new test still focuses on the student's ability to read and process information, organize their thoughts and opinions, and formulate arguments and convincing narratives into a well-structured essay. Unlike the old test, many of the essay prompts will feature charts or figures that present data that must be analyzed and understood by the student before they attempt to tackle the question. In some cases, the student will need to analyze the writer of the prompt themselves, observing and understanding the literary techniques and rhetorical devices commonly used in writing.

My writing course will attempt to prepare students to handle the stress of maintaining critical thinking skills, a requirement in the test, under the pressure of time. The three main skills I aim to have the students hone will be their ability to develop their ideas from the author's inferences from the data within the given material, understand how such data is used to support and corroborate arguments and logical conclusions, and use these tools to formulate arguments and inferences of their own. I intend on keeping track of each student's individual progress and tailor individual sessions towards helping students overcome what is generally considered the most intimidating portion of the test, to view it as nothing more than a simple routine exercise in logic and critical thinking.

Having been a former high-school student preparing for the SAT's myself, I believe that the most important part of effective teaching is being able to engage students with material that is interesting and relatable, as well as having the students view the academic work as something more important than simply assignments. I understand that open discussion in class, along with an environment that encourages asking questions and trying to understand more about writing than simply the rules and guidelines of the essay. The test is just a stepping stone into a world where expressing your thoughts and being able to understand those of others is paramount to your success. I want students to leave with the impression that writing can be more than just work, that it can be a form of self-improvement and focusing one's thoughts, and with confidence in themselves as truly capable writers.

Out of all the components in the college application packet, the personal essay is unique in that it is the only tool a college has to figure the applicant out as a person. Naturally it is hard to understate the importance and the difficulty of this element - students have a mere page to pitch their best qualities to admissions offices inundated with thousands of applications that are, without the essays, quite similar every year. To tackle this intimidating task, my class aims to break the process down into digestible bits with the ultimate goal of generating successful personal essays, improving writing skills, and molding personal dreams into applications.

The Common Application
The first steps to starting the personal essay is understanding what the common app constitutes of. Students will be provided with hard copies of the whole Common App form to briefly go over in class and instructed to fill out afterwards. This will provide an opportunity to gain some tactical insights regarding what the application process expects from themselves while giving myself a foundation to start my individual advisory sessions. With this backdrop from the first day, students will move onto the final portion of the Common App: the personal essay.

The Topic
To some students, the subject of ‘oneself’ can be lucid - they know their passions and interests and have a life goal they strive for. For others, the subject may be vague. Whether the student is the former or the latter, the most successful personal essays proficiently highlight strong characteristics of the applicant. Focusing on finding just the right strength of character a student has is just as important as determining their life goal when it comes to the personal essay. With this objective in mind, students will engage in brainstorming sessions as a group to discuss about their aspirations, characteristics, and interesting life experiences whilst being exposed to multiple well written essays and some poorly written ones to point the general direction where the discussion needs to go. This will be done on a weekly basis as the best ideas are often sporadic in nature.

The Narrative
Good personal essays always have a good story supporting its ideas. Writing good stories is easier said than done. Although skillful storytelling takes a lot of effort, there are key factors that can improve one’s storytelling - writing effective hooks, using descriptive language, and acuteness with words are all areas students will learn to improve in class. When it comes to the process, tackling these areas as a group not only is more effective but also more interesting than the classical classroom setting. Hence, much of the work here will take place in active discussion sessions throughout the class. After a couple days, students will practice applying what was learned into writing in class and build upon the essay for a number of cycles through my comments and peer reviews.

The Individual
Albeit all the formulated plans for the class, the personal essay and the application process is highly individualized. Whether the differentiation comes from prioritizing SAT or linguistic skill, I plan on dedicating as much individual time as possible as an advisor to support both writing and college application. As a teacher I will endeavor to whip up good personal essays and writing skills, and as a mentor, I will periodically advise each student on a one-on-one basis to help formulate clear extracurricular plans, resumes, target schools and goals.

While in the Old test, MATH accounted for one third of the total score, in the New test, it takes up half the total score. Because of this increase in weight, achieving perfection in the Math section will contribute to increasing the total score. Achieving perfection is not luck-dependent. Continuous question solving and careful attention to details is the way to get 800 in MATH. Since the Math section does not deal with college-level tricky questions, both students who are confident in math and those who are not should go through persistent drilling of questions to overcome their weaknesses and stop making mistakes. Meanwhile, students should not expect this class to be a boring, repetition of question solving class. This class will also tackle interesting, out-of-the-book questions that is helpful in filling up students’ weaknesses. Solving questions that are a little bit more challenging will deepen students’ understanding of various concepts. Also, this class will include problem solving tips and other test taking techniques that will help achieve perfection in the Math section.

The biggest difference between the Old and New test is the Reading Section. While the Old test takes a good proportion of critical thinking in assessing students’ ability to read and analyze the text, New test is more focused on the ability to direct and reference the specific context that the question requires you to answer. In terms of this, New test requires you to be swift and straightforward in solving the questions, which brings up the importance of individualized strategies in reading passages.

The most efficient way to improve one’s reading comprehension skill is to read as many passages as possible. My course will comprise of 2 passages worth of coverage per class. This coverage will include in-depth text analysis and question time.

Every Friday the class will take a practice test, which the result will be shown in the transcript under specific subcategorization of Find the Evidence/ Data Interpretation/ Vocab in Context. Through this, I am expecting that the students will be able to tell which section needs to be worked on.

The trends in Grammar related questions have changed to passage focused questions. Questions regarding expression in ideas as well as traditional questions (i.e. subject and verb agreement) appear throughout the test. The classes I will be teaching will primarily be a lecture-based course with plenty of in-class and homework assignments.

Specifically, topics that will be covered include:

-  Punctuations: use of comma, semi-colon, colon, etc.

-  Subject and Verb Agreement

-  Parallelism

-  Data Analysis

-  Redundancy

-  Faulty Modifier

-  Style & Tone

-  Singular and Plural form

Students who are unfamiliar with English grammar will have the opportunity to understand the logic of the language.

Although the essay portion of the new style is listed as optional, it is still required by several universities and necessary in order to gain entrance into elite schools. While the old style essay required students to write about their personal opinions and experiences, the new style essay focuses on reading comprehension and accurate understanding of the literary devices used. Therefore, both reading and writing skills are needed in order to do well on this section of the exam. My class will focus on these two main parts of the essay and students will leave with the capacity to both take apart and form an argumentative essay.

During the first week, students will be introduced to the new style essay - they will learn about how to proceed during the test and become aware of the different types of texts that appear in this section. For the next two weeks, students will focus on finding different literary devices within the text and learn how to organize their own essays based on their analysis of the text. The final week will help students push to be able to complete well-rounded essays, giving them the tools to be able to more quickly find textual evidence and form their essays.
